The Bottelary Hills MTB trails in the Bottelary
Hills Conservancy traverse privately owned land and offer scenic natural
beauty and incredible views of the Winelands, Table Mountain and False
Bay. There is one main route with various loops of different levels of
difficulty connected to it. The routes comprise of jeep track, technical

too technical, some steep climbs and switchbacks will test your legs and
skills.

Conservancy 5-40 km of pure mountain biking
Mountain
bikers will find the trails designed to suit all levels of riders, with
well-planned contours making the ascent relatively easy. Enjoy up to 40km of manicured single track. The Simonsberg network offers
spectacular views, big climbs and fast descents.
Most of the network is graded blue (Intermediate) with some green
(Beginner) trails. The
Delheim Loop links to Muratie via the ‘Dozer’ switchback, and this takes you
onto the superb Ho Chi Minh section. Continue via ‘The Elevator’ and ‘Jackson’s
Jaunt’ onto ‘Gillooly’s’, a connecting point with a good site map to show you
exactly where you are.
The
‘Smuggler’s Traverse’ trips you up to one of the highlights of your Simonsberg
ride: get ready to pin back your ears as bomb into the ‘Uitkyk Bush Tunnel’,
arguably one of the most contested Strava segments in Cape mountain biking. At
‘Angus Junction’, loop right onto the ‘Uitkyk View Trail’ for breathtaking
views across the whole of the conservancy.
The trail is well maintained and never crowded. Simonsberg is a gem
amongst the vast network of trails in the Stellenbosch area.

combination of the trails at Oak Valley and Paul Cluver wine estates. The
trails form part of the Wines2Whales multi-day stage race every year and also
often host a stage of the world famous Cape Epic. There are various routes
from 14km for beginners to 75km with more than 1000m of ascend for fit riders.
The singletracks are well-maintained and consist of bridges over farm fences,
flowing berms and switchbacks through pine and oak forests, rolling fields of
grass pastures, apple and pear orchards and natural fynbos. Two of the
highlights are the Mamba rollercoaster and the Pofadder bridge.
Grabouw
A-2-Z Trails
This relatively new trail in the Grabouw Forest
and Cape Pine plantations consists of 26 sections of pure singletrack joy. From
the entrance gate we climb up to the start of the Gantouw Pass. Once on
section A, there is hardly any jeep track and singletrail junkies will
absolutely enjoy themselves. The total length of the circular route is 36km and
includes some interesting features like wooden bridges crossing over streams,
berms, and wooden structures over and between rocks. Get ready for some short
but brutish climbs, hair-raising rocky downhills, sandy switchbacks and tree
roots in the forest. For fit riders we can add on an extention for a brutal
climb (on tar road) up to Hansekop for spectacular views over Cape Town and
beyond. Watch out for the endemic Cape Rockjumper bird found only in the Cape
Fold Mountains.
